EV Charger installation in Mattishall, Norfolk.

Published

A Mattishall resident booked an EV survey with The Norwich Electricians – he said he had no idea if it was even possible to have an EV charger installed at home and what his options were.

The house itself was a period home around 150 years old, detached and very quaint – even by Norfolk village standards.

The main concern was that the Electrical intake being directly under the stairs which sat in the middle of the hallway and had rooms either side of it and a bottom stair of around 1 metre in size separating it from the nearest external wall.

There was no obvious cable route – there were old walls which had flaunched bricks and retro fitted damp proof injection to consider.

Having surveyed the site, I was able to suggest 2 cable routes;

  • Out underneath the metre wide bottom stair and out through the external wall at the rear of the property – installing either an EV ultra cable around the perimeter or a different cable type in some form of containment such as conduit.

  • Drill through the lounge wall which the electrical intake backed onto, then run a mini-trunking cable across the top of the skirting board for the cable to sit within and then out through the external wall to the side of the property.

Both options would allow for the charger to be mounted discreetly at the front of property.

The homeowner had some concerns about drilling out the rear of the property due to the wall being in poor condition with the damp proof injection in line with our intended route as well as seeing more cable on the outside of the property.

After discussion with the homeowner and assurances that trunking would be minimalist and blend in, it was decided we would run through the lounge in trunking and out to the side of the house.

The lounge wall in question was 60% covered by a sofa.

We completed the installation and it’s hard to notice the trunking running on the top of the skirting – unless you are told it is there and actively look for it, you won’t notice it.

Due to the period features of the property, it was important that the charger complemented the house aesthetically and didn’t look out of place, or look tacky.

We recommended a charger that could be customised, thus allowing it to represent the homeowners taste as well as being sympathetic to the building and its surroundings.

As you’ll see from the finished photos – the choice of colours of the body and wooden lid means the charger blends in well.

Naturally the homeowner was very happy and left a 5-star review.

Luke has been brilliant. The initial appointment to survey the property and make recommendations on the way forward was really helpful and meant we could make a decision with all the info I needed. Once we decided to go ahead the work and service were perfect. I highly recommend Luke to anyone considering an EV charger installation with a challenging location/cabling route.
